Nineteen-year-old criminology student Shalisa Shaw had no idea how much work was involved in starting a business until she enrolled in an introductory entrepreneurship course at Carleton University.

With three other students, she sold nearly $2,500 worth of glass water bottles predominantly targeted at the millennials market. Sandblasted with custom messages, Shaw’s “VESI” bottles pulled in about $1,400 in profits that were donated to the Ottawa Humane Society.

More than 50 people celebrated the accomplishments of students in Carleton University’s Technology Innovation Management (TIM) program who hail from North and South American countries.Thirteen students got the chance to speak about their business opportunities and research accomplishments at the June 11, 2015 event at the university’s Accelerator – a unique space for entrepreneurs.The TIM program includes students from several South American countries, including Venezuela, Brazil, Columbia, Guyana and Peru.

The long-term success of new technology companies requires "a razor-sharp focus on customer needs and adoption of a scalable business model" (Sir Terence Matthews, Founder and Chairman of the Board, Mitel Networks Corporation).

TIM graduate Natasha D’Souza (2012) has received a $50,000 neuroscience entrepreneurial fellowship given by the Ontario Brain Institute (OBI) in partnership with Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE). D’Souza’s fellowship is one of 10 Ontario post-graduate fellowships to help entrepreneurs turn their neuro-discoveries into companies and jobs. Natasha is the founder and CEO of Virtual EyeSee.
