Technology Innovation Management Program is best known for the kind of research TIM students make during their study. The program provides a great opportunity for students to make significant contribution in different research areas as per their interest and expertise. Students choose to work on either TIM project or thesis. Students working on TIM project intend to solve a client problem by carrying out research based on their client problem. On the other hand, students working on thesis define a research problem in their chosen domain and carry out their research.

Saswat Mohalik, a TIM student working on his TIM project talks about his project and what value his project is going to create.  “My TIM research project is named as Adoption to Work from Home in public sector. It all started while a casual discussion with my supervisor and Chief Information Officer in the summer 2017 while I was an intern with IT Services, City of Ottawa. They were quite excited to understand why the work from home culture is flourishing in a private sector but has not been adopted so well in public sectors especially within City of Ottawa. When I brought this idea to my professor and now my supervisor, Professor Mika Westerlund’s table, he was quite interested to supervise this research project. Then we together planned the roadmap for this project. And no stopping from then, literature reviews, rounds of interviews with the City staff, discussions and surveys, I did everything required to successfully complete this project. Now I am in the final stage of my project. It was a great learning curve to understand the behaviors and mindset of the public sector employees towards telecommuting.

Mohalik further adds “I consider this project as a journey of 6 months that helped me gain some real time experience in educational and professional field. Every other staff within the IT Services along with the management team are excited to look at the end results of this project, hoping to enlighten themselves and bring some small changes to grow the adoption to work from home. All thanks to TIM Department and City of Ottawa for this great learning opportunity.”

 Haiwen Hou, another TIM student adds “It’s a great learning experience for me. I feel so proud to be a part of this program that gives us an opportunity to study real companies and come out with solutions to their problems.”
